    MIDLAND, N.C. (WBTV) - Thirty-six citations were made at a sobriety checkpoint station in Cabarrus Couty last month, deputies recently announced. The checkpoint was conducted between 8 and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, along Highway 601 near Bethel School Road in Midland. Deputies said the checkpoint was set up as the area had seen “multiple traffic-related incidents and ongoing speeding complaints.” Due to those incidents, the speed limit was recently reduced from 55 to 45 mph.

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A Charlotte animal shelter was considered to be at an “emergency capacity level” Friday as euthanasia decisions loom. The announcement came on Friday, April 11, as the daily kennel status report showed critical levels for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control shelters. Officials said that, as of the morning update, two kennels were open at Toomey, five at Lost Dog, and only one in adoption dog. Additionally, 13 were open in puppy for flex space.

Optimist Hall, located off Parkwood Avenue just outside Uptown, was named one of the country’s top 20 food halls in the report. The food hall offers a variety of food including southern-inspired dishes, homemade barbeque, Asian-style dumplings, Italian favorites, Mexican specialties, fresh bakery items, and an assortment of desserts.

    ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) - A driver was killed after hitting a deer in a single-car York County wreck Tuesday night, according to troopers. The collision happened around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, along Interstate 77 near South Carolina Highway 161. Troopers said a Nissan SUV was traveling southbound on the freeway and struck a deer on the road. After hitting the animal, officials said the driver lost control of the car and hit a barrier off the right side of I-77.

The winner is reportedly from Craven County and bought their $2 Monopoly ticket on Tuesday, April 8, instantly winning the Grand Fortune Jackpot. Lottery officials said the win was the biggest digital instant jackpot lottery prize in state history. The odds of winning were 1 in 25 million, according to a press release.
