In a season where No. 42 Illinois (14-12, 8-5) earned 1-1 splits in five of its seven weekends of Big Ten play, it was only fitting that it did the same in the Big Ten tournament. In the first round, No. 7 seed Illinois swept No. 10 seed Northwestern (13-13, 6-7). The victory moved Illinois to 3-0 against Northwestern this season and also marked its seventh straight win over the in-state rival.

For five straight weeks of Big Ten play, No. 42 Illinois (14-11, 8-5) split its pair of weekend matches. However, the Illini finally broke out of their cycle and won three straight matches to close out the regular season. Last weekend, Illinois swept Indiana (8-15, 2-11) and No. 68 Purdue (11-9, 5-8) without surrendering a point. The new 12-team Big Ten tournament is up next for Illinois, followed by a potential invitation to the NCAA tournament.

The end of No. 45 Illinois’ (10-11, 5-5) home season was eventful. On top of defeating Penn State (13-7, 4-6) in less than two hours, it also took sets in five singles matches against No. 10 Ohio State (15-2, 9-1). The Illini still lost to the Buckeyes, but it was an impressive showing nonetheless. This weekend, Illinois will head North for its second match of the season against No. 44 Northwestern (11-11, 4-6).

After serving as interim head coach of women’s tennis in 2015-16, Evan Clark earned the official title of head coach in June 2016. Illinois was 15-9 that season, including an 8-3 mark in the Big Ten. Despite missing out on the NCAA tournament, Director of Athletics Josh Whitman saw enough from Clark to hand over the keys full time. Illinois struggled in 2016-17 (14-13) but hit its stride under Clark in 2017-18.

Conference play is officially underway for No. 45 Illinois women’s tennis (6-7, 1-1), which went 5-6 in a tough non-conference schedule. However, the Big Ten is no step down in competition. Illinois went up against No. 60 Minnesota (8-8, 0-3) and No. 17 Wisconsin (10-1, 3-0) in its first weekend. The Illini were on the road for both matches, starting in Minneapolis on Friday and ending in Madison on Sunday. After dropping its first match of the year, Illinois (1-1, 0-0) responded with a 4-2 home win over Northwestern (3-1, 0-0). It was the Illini’s fifth straight victory over the Wildcats, with the all-time series now sitting at 7-26. This match did not count as conference play, which starts in early March. Following the loss on Saturday, Northwestern eased the pain with a pair of wins on Sunday. Illinois does not play its next match until Friday when it hosts Georgia Tech.
