GREENVILLE — After hitting a procedural stumbling block earlier this year, the proposed revitalization of a Greenville County industrial site — one that would bring commercial space, hundreds of new homes, and 13 acres of trails and green space — is back in play. The Steel Heddle Plant off Rutherford Road was once a booming manufacturing plant, for decades producing equipment for the textile mills that functioned as the backbone of the area's economy.

GREENVILLE — The county unveiled a proposed budget for the next fiscal year this week, a spending plan that slightly reduces property taxes and significantly increases spending on roads. At the same time, the draft budget cuts back spending for greenspace and affordable housing, and diverts funding from the Greenville County School District. The small reduction in taxes comes after a levy increase two years ago sparked political backlash and upheaval on county council.

GREENVILLE — The county is poised to accept a $900,000 federal grant that would fund a 0.6-mile trail segment connecting the West Greenville arts district and two former textile mills that have found new life as commercial and residential hubs. Dubbed the Textile Crescent Trail, it would extend from Abney Street at Brandon Mill south to Judson Mill, ending at Easley Bridge Road.

PIEDMONT — A Greenville County deputy shot and injured an armed man during an April 30 confrontation in Piedmont, according to a statement from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. No deputies were injured during the event. Greenville County deputies were at the South Piedmont Highway scene near Lindley Road that afternoon conducting surveillance to assist the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, which was attempting to serve a man with a warrant stemming from an incident in its jurisdiction.

Hundreds of Americorps service members working for South Carolina nonprofits found themselves abruptly out of work this week after the Trump Administration gutted the federal program. Americorps, created in 1993, is an agency that encompasses a number of community service-based programs, overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars — the bulk of which is grant funding — and dispatching tens of thousands of service members across the country.
