The last few weeks of the boys track and field season have been defined by the performances of distance runners across the state. Distance runners from all corners of the state have flocked to late night meets at Cherokee, Ridge & Hillsborough to test themselves against the state’s top talent. Union Catholic and Christian Brothers have taken it a step further, challenging themselves against the nation’s top distance runners. The state leaderboards thus far have taken a beating because of it.

Nick Vena was at a crossroads. But eighth place, still within striking distance of the lead. He’s seen this story play out so many times over the last few seasons. His senior distance runner has a knack for picking off runners in the final 400 meters.

PLEASE NOTE: The photo gallery from the Ridge Night of 1600s will be up by tomorrow afternoon. You’ll be hard-pressed to find Union Catholic sophomore Cayleigh Kaiser rattled at any point in a race. Her composure is as good as any distance runner in the state. And it needed to be on point on Wednesday. In frigid, windswept conditions, she was the only female runner competing in a heat that included sub-5 minute boys runners.
