Sons to help Heritage Center with project

For almost as long as there’s been a chapter at the Elliott-Keninger American Legion Post in Ackley, the Sons of the American Legion have been helping the post and the community. This year marks the 20th since the chapter of the Sons chartered with around 20 members. Today there are 44 members, and the scope of their aide has grown through burger feeds and donations.
State qualifiers gone for Cougars, hopefuls return

Fifth-year head AGWSR boys track and field coach Bill Heubner has had the occasional flare-up from his teams. Last year he had Aiden Heitland in the shot put and Kaden Abbas in the 110-meter high hurdles at State. There have been eight State qualifying events during Heubner’s tenure. Three of those were Heitland, who was a two-time qualifier in the shot put and one-time in discus. But they are gone, leaving a new batch of hopefuls.
Trio returns with top scores for AGWSR

AGWSR head girls golf coach Stacy Drake enters her third year with something she hasn’t had a lot of recently, experience. Three returning seniors are back to hopefully lead Drake’s Cougar squad to their first State Tournament since 2010 when Drake was a senior and AGWSR finished fourth. The Cougars have flirted with State several times in Drake’s tenure, getting to the second round of Regionals twice. The last coming in 2021. Gabrielle Kruger leads the list of likely candidates.
AGWSR girls look for more State returns

The AGWSR girls have led the last two Iowa State High School Track and Field Championships for at least a day. Two years ago they finished third, last year they landed sixth. A solid core from both of those teams return, but there are lot of points lost to graduation. Gone is Abby Veld who medaled in both the shot put (3rd) and discus (4th).
Cougars look to continue strong springs

Last spring was a bit of an anomaly for the AGWSR boys golf team. For the first time in head coach Ryley Schipper’s five-year tenure, they weren’t involved in the State Championships. They hope to get back this spring with two returning from the 2023 State qualifying squad. But there are definite holes to fill, even with State experience coming back.

AGWSR Board approves salary ask

The AGWSR School Board met Thursday for a pair of special meetings, including teacher pay negotiations and the first of two hearings on the proposed tax levy for 2025-26. Deb Oldenburger, representing the AGWSR Education Association, presented the Board with its proposal for a 2.6-percent addition to the current teacher salary. That increase meant a $91,000 total increase across the district. The new state minimums of $50,000 and $62,000 will be added in separately for those receiving them.
Fire departments practice, make room for new HCC building

The old and antiquated met the young and new last Saturday in Steamboat Rock when members of four fire departments gathered to practice their skills. In doing so, those firefighters from Steamboat Rock, Ackley, Grundy Center and Coulter cleared the way for a new lodge to replace the old Steamboat Rock Boat Club. It took about an hour-and-a-half. But it was more than making the way for a new lodge, which is only part of the planned improvements to the area.
Lower levy follows debt payoff

The Ackley City Council briefly discussed the proposed budget for 2025-26 at its meeting Wednesday night. City Clerk Malena Dennis indicated that the tax levy has decreased thanks to the absence of debt. “Our tax levy decreased because we a debt levy anymore,” Dennis said. “We had a 2020 General Obligation bond that will be paid of in June that was around $1 million.
AGWSR to share new superintendent

From St. Paul, Minnesota to Knoxville, Iowa, Ben Petty has followed a path in education. That path eventually led him to Conrad and, now, Ackley. Petty was recently approved as AGWSR’s new superintendent, ending a brief search to replace Eric Smith who is leaving at the end of his contract for the year. Petty, 52, will assume duties on July 1. Petty’s road to AGWSR was filled with stops. From Minnesota, his family moved to a farm in southern Iowa.
