The 2025 NHL Draft picture is becoming clearer as we approach June. Matthew Schaefer is a decent No. 1 prospect, but the top of this draft overall isn't great, leading this to being a below-average draft class. It's a strong forward group, especially at center, with several premium forward prospects. It's a poor defense group, though. The second defenseman picked this year would have been my sixth- or seventh-ranked defenseman last season. Ranked players are placed into tiers and given tool grades.

NHL Central Scouting released its final rankings for the 2025 NHL Draft class on Tuesday morning. Here are the rankings and some takeaways from The Athletic 's draft experts, Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler.

As the season has gone along and we near postseason play in junior hockey, the 2025 NHL Draft class has shown steady improvements. I would argue it's still below average, but there's been enough upward trajectory that I could buy it being closer to an average class. Erie defenseman Matthew Schaefer is still my No. 1 ranked prospect and the favorite to go first despite his limited playing time this season due to injury. I would not qualify him as an absolute lock to be the top pick, though.
