Naomi Cohen, a fourth-grader from Baker Hill Elementary School, recently triumphed at the International Jewish Knowledge Competition. The International Jewish Knowledge Competition, also known as JewQ, is facilitated by CKids, the Chabad Children’s Network. JewQ is a unique spelling bee-style competition designed to deepen participants’ understanding of Jewish traditions, history, and values. Students from third to seventh grade compete against each other from across the globe.

As part of a statewide effort to increase volunteer firefighters, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) 15th Annual RecruitNY campaign kicked off at the Plainview Fire Department located at 885 Old Country Rd, in Plainview. The past several years have been challenging for volunteer fire departments throughout the state. Many are faced with decreased membership and increased call volume. Nearly 90 percent of fire departments across New York State are volunteer based.

Sixth annual “Autism Can Do” scholarship John’s Crazy Socks has announced that Lukeson Ashbourne of Maplewood, NJ is the winner of the company’s sixth annual “Autism Can Do Scholarship.” The announcement was made to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, which celebrates the uniqueness of every individual on the spectrum and to educate more people about autism, promoting acceptance and inclusion. The month of April is also designated as World Autism Month.

Join us for an exciting adventure at the Port Washington Public Library with the annual “Great Library Card Adventure (GLCA)”! From now to April 30, kindergarteners through fifth-graders in the Port Washington School District can come to the Children’s Room and help win books for their school libraries. The grade with the most participants will win. Rachel Fox, Director of Children’s Services, started the GLCA program 22 years ago to encourage more kids to use the library.
