A Hernando community tradition continues Saturday, Sept. 7, when the Hernando County YMCA presents the 2024 Freedom Run: 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk to Remember, an event held in divine tribute to all whose lives were forever changed by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The event starts with a 7:30 a.m. registration at the site, Brooksville Airport, 16485 Runway Drive, Brooksville.

If you are a poet and want the world to know it, then submit your finest work to the Booksville Festival Poetry Contest. As participants share their words with their community, they’ll play a role in a major Hernando literary festival. All eligible entries will be included in a poetry anthology that will be released at the Booksville Festival, 131 S. Main St. in Brooksville, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. January 25, 2025.

As people in this and surrounding areas continue to recover from the effects of Hurricane Debby, Hernando County nonprofits and charitable organizations are stepping up to help out—offering everything from food to hurricane supplies for those who need it. At this time, some of these organizations are calling upon the community to help them help others. DayStar Life Center, an all-volunteer organization helping needy families in Hernando County since 1983, needs donations now.
