JD Clayton might be a born record producer and not know it yet. The Arkansas singer, songwriter and bandleader had a batch of new songs, and loose plans to follow up on his well-received debut record. He didn’t cast about for the chance to work with a name-brand record-maker. He wasn’t even sure he had an album’s worth of material, and his band hadn’t heard anything yet.

When Jeremie Albino was a kid growing up in Ontario, Canada, his uncle started calling him “Broadway,” not because he seemed destined for musical theater, but because Jeremie had…something. He was a paradox - a shy kid who could be coaxed into singing for the family and a budding folk musician inspired by street performers. “Toronto's has this really big busker fest, and my parents would bring us down there,” Albino says in Episode 319 of The String. “And it wasn't just music.

Cajun country, the prairie region of central Louisiana more historically known as Acadiana, takes hold of certain people who visit. I made my first trip there in the 90s and found myself in magical territory, experiencing late night zydeco dances, live local radio featuring old-time Cajun music sung in French, and of course magnificent food. I think about it all the time.

In a time of venue upheaval and cozy old dives giving way to shiny towers, Nashville’s Springwater Supper Club And Lounge seems immortal. The three promises by the door are verifiable: Live Music, Cold Beer, Cash Only. Glad I had a twenty tucked in my wallet for Olivia Wolf’s show on a frozen night in late February.

Last year, the biggest-ever study of the health of Nashville music venues (we reported on it here) found a scene full of challenges. “Real estate and other costs are becoming increasingly expensive, making new venues hard to start,” it said. Others have considered moving.

Jesus I come back to this god forsaken website to find that Musk has ordered piles of shit in my notifications - lying posts by the likes of Laura Loomer and Rick Grennell. What a shithole country this is. Find me on Threads. 🤮

In the past 3 weeks, my hopes for Threads have grown considerably, b/c of the music community growing there. Folks I'd love to see active there include @its_adamneely @JasonIsbell @MarissaRMoss @chelywright @Elizabeth_Cook @FionaPrine @SoulCountry1 Check it out. It's better.

I'm having more fun with 400 followers on Threads than I did with 4,000 on Twitter. The music community there has surged there in the past month. It's lively and good natured. No Nazis in sight. If you haven't checked in for a while, do so. https://t.co/FSzs3IFNVN
