In a time of venue upheaval and cozy old dives giving way to shiny towers, Nashville’s Springwater Supper Club And Lounge seems immortal. It claims to be the oldest continuously operating bar in Tennessee, with a birth year of 1893, and who am I to disbelieve? The three promises by the door are verifiable: Live Music, Cold Beer, Cash Only. Glad I had a twenty tucked in my wallet for Olivia Wolf’s show on a frozen night in late February.

Last year, the biggest-ever study of the health of Nashville music venues (we reported on it here) found a scene full of challenges. “Real estate and other costs are becoming increasingly expensive, making new venues hard to start,” it said. But you can’t keep a good Music City down, and recent months have seen several openings, conspicuously Skinny Dennis in East Nashville and the Pinnacle downton, with more to come. Others have considered moving.

There are home studios and official studios that feel homey, but to answer the question how homey can one studio get, you’d want to visit Silent Desert Studio in Nolensville, TN. It’s built in the producer/owner’s former home, next to his family’s new home, and artists can stay there while they’re working.

How appropriate for our third birthday edition of The Old Fashioned that the most newsworthy album in the bluegrass and fiddle band business is one dedicated to our patron saint, John Hartford. Then in 2020 came the John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Vol. 1, which brought to life some of those original compositions. Now, Vol.

In the never ending and sometimes awkward dance of art and commerce, some creators are lighter on their feet than others. Take Adam Wright, who’s been writing songs for Music Row publishers for two decades. Hits for the bro radio? Not his lane. Jesus I come back to this god forsaken website to find that Musk has ordered piles of shit in my notifications - lying posts by the likes of Laura Loomer and Rick Grennell. What a shithole country this is. Find me on Threads. 🤮

I'm having more fun with 400 followers on Threads than I did with 4,000 on Twitter. The music community there has surged there in the past month. It's lively and good natured. No Nazis in sight. If you haven't checked in for a while, do so. https://t.co/FSzs3IFNVN
