String Theories

String Theories

…is a classic online journal and the newest version of a concept that has inspired me for years. As someone who loves music and plays string instruments, I found it fascinating to learn that some cosmologists think the universe is made up of tiny strings vibrating in various dimensions. This idea resonated with me. My String Theory project has evolved into a blog, a video and documentary production company, a live performance, a book concept, and now a talk show on WMOT 89.5 FM.

Some of you are getting this Substack newsletter from me, unexpectedly, for the first time. I’m publishing a book this fall (described below) and in the interest of reaching long-time friends and associates, I’ve taken the liberty of adding a few select email addresses to my free mailing list. I hope that’s okay! It’s a free and infrequent update on my work, with news about the book coming in the year ahead. Unsubscribe with a simple click at the bottom if you wish to.

Hello Friends. When Trump won the White House in 2016, I was so bothered and anxious that I decided to put my mind on something big and different. I dove into reading Moby Dick for the first time, and it was a magnificent, transporting experience. On a daily basis, I’d step through a portal to a 19th century whaling ship with all these cross cutting dramas and power struggles, and the sad situation in the country that faded for a while.

Happy New Year friends. I hope you had a rewarding Christmas or Hanukkah - or just a good year-end pause to reflect and re-energize. We stayed home and had a warm Christmas day with my girls and Taylor’s Mom. Now I get a few days’ break - a calm closeout to an adventurous and fulfilling year. Just to quickly review 2024, with links to stories in case you missed ‘em: I got to “work” my first-ever music cruise in the dead of last winter (I’ve been invited back for Jan. 2025!).

Dear Friends,Summer travels are over, but I’m walkin’. At least I’m tryin’. The 12 South/Melrose neighborhood has looked glamorously golden on these recent October afternoons. Not that I’m rigorous about my exercise, but how could somebody not get outside at this time of year? Last weekend especially - with a charming, kids-and-dogs-friendly Grateful Dead festival in Sevier Park - was soothing at a time when we could all use some of that.

A body in motion remains in motion. I’m just home from two nights in Las Vegas where I experienced the now famous residency of Dead & Co. at The Sphere. Before that, I ran up I-65 for an overnight in Lexington, KY to catch a show by alt-country icons the Old 97’s and an interview with their charming and erudite leader Rhett Miller.
