Child idols in South Korea and beyond: Manufacturing young stars at the intersection of the K-pop and influencer industries

IntroductionCompetition is rife among South Korean (hereafter Korean) idol groups, with an average of 70 new groups launching annually (Ham, 2021). One of most notable, NewJeans, debuted in July 2022 produced by ADOR, a subsidiary of the Korean entertainment company HYBE (best known for the Korean idol group BTS). NewJeans immediately gained worldwide popularity, with more than 100 million Spotify streams in their first month (Cho, 2022).
