Georgia Power Foundation has awarded 21 new grants totaling $1 million to help fill Georgia’s labor pipeline with qualified workers. Since 2020, Georgia Power Foundation’s Workforce for Georgia program, administered by the Georgia Foundation for Public Education, has provided 65 grants worth $2.25 million to support career training through education programs in high schools and colleges.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights landed new funding to help its expansion effort. Norfolk Southern Corp. pledged $500,000 to support the expansion of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The donation gives the Atlanta-based railroad operator naming rights for the Freedom Room, one of three new classrooms in the Shirley Clarke Franklin Pavilion.

The Ray C. Anderson foundation was formed after its namesake's death more than a decade ago. The Ray C. Anderson Foundation will close down operations by 2030, about 12 years after awarding its first grant to support environmental sustainability in business and government. The decision was made by the family and trustees of the organization’s namesake. Anderson, who had been the founder and CEO of Atlanta-based flooring manufacturer Interface Inc., died in 2011.

The Downtown center made the announcement Thursday night at its annual Power to Inspire fundraiser attended by hundreds of business executives, civic leaders and others. When the National Center for Civil and Human Rights reopens this fall after completing an expansion, one of its new wings will be called the Shirley Clarke Franklin Pavillion in honor of Atlanta’s 58th mayor.
