Geoff Burke-Imagn Images It was there for the taking. For roughly three-quarters of BC’s ACC home opener against the SMU Mustangs, they looked competitive. Despite the overall poor defense for most of the game, the offense working in fits and starts, they led by as many as eight in the first half. While they did not lead in the second half they cut the lead to as few as three. Then SMU made some adjustments – most notably switching to a zone defense – and BC collapsed.

Jamie Rhodes-Imagn Images After much too long of a break, I’m back! (Apologies for the lack of coverage the past few weeks). We have a lot to catch up on; since my last column the Eagles have had some very high highs (beating a top-30 KenPom team in Boise State to win the Cayman Islands Classic) and some very low lows (pretty much everything since then). The Eagles now sit at 6-4 having most recently dropped their ACC opener on the road at Wake Forest.

Grayson James led the BC offense to another successful outing and the Eagles won yet another game against a bowl-eligible ACC team. For me the biggest thing that has been jumping out is the emergence of Reed Harris as a vertical threat in the passing game. Now that he has a QB that can sling it deep, Harris has made some incredible downfield grabs that have really opened up this Boston College offense.

After trouncing UNC (which proved to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back for Mack Brown) to reach six wins and bowl eligibility, Bill O’Brien was very clear: his team is no doubt happy to clinch bowl eligibility, but there is business to take care of first. The Pitt Panthers visit Chestnut Hill this weekend.

The field features eight teams, of which three participated in last year’s March Madness tournament. Although Boston College is the only Power 5 team in the tournament, they actually come in as the third-highest ranked team at the tournament (per KenPom rankings).

With two games left on the schedule, BC needs one more to secure a bowl game in Bill O’Brien’s first year at the helm. With the North Carolina Tar Heels coming to Alumni Stadium, this weekend is probably the best chance for the Eagles to clinch bowl eligibility (before a visit from Pitt). That does not mean it will be easy.
