An Alva prison, a Talihina nursing home for veterans and the small Okmulgee County town of Morris all share one thing in common — their tap water has exceeded federal limits for lead in the past three years. In fact, the three unrelated populations are among some 26,000 people in Oklahoma who are served by water systems found to exceed federal limits for lead in the past three years, according to a Tulsa World analysis of government data.

Jay attorney Winston Connor II on Wednesday sued a district attorney who last week implicated Connor in a criminal investigation into a drug ring allegedly run out of prison by a murderer. Connor filed a libel, slander and defamation lawsuit against District Attorney Kenny Wright, claiming statements Wright made to the media last week about his conversation with the target of a drug ring investigation damaged his reputation and practice.

Sales tax collections in the city of Jenks have increased 27.4% since Tulsa Premium Outlets opened in mid-August, according to a Tulsa World analysis of sales tax data. Since the outlet mall opened Aug. 15, Jenks has received $5,532,518 in sales tax collections, a $1,191,550 increase in receipts over the same time a year ago. The city of Jenks' sales tax rate is 0.0355 on each dollar of sales. Meanwhile, the mall's opening hasn’t had much of an effect on overall Tulsa County sales.

The Illinois River's water quality has not improved in the 15 years since a federal trial on the matter ended, a lifelong proponent of the river testified Tuesday. Ed Fite, a former director of the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission, told a federal judge that the river is in trouble. “The river isn’t what it was,” Fite said.
