WEST ORANGE, NJ – World Languages students at West Orange High School celebrated several successes at the annual Honor Society Inductions, where new students were inducted into Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish societies and graduating seniors received cords for graduation.

935 school districts and 88 individual schools were recognized nationally for celebrating the "outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made for districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to and access to music education," according to the NAMM website.

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The third annual West Orange Rotary “Flags for Heroes” Project was recognized in a brief ceremony at West Orange High School on May 15. As residents drive along Pleasant Valley Way, they will see 100 American flags flying in front of West Orange High and Kelly Elementary schools.

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Mt. Pleasant Elementary School held its first-ever Multicultural Night on May 7, much to the delight of the school community. Families celebrating different countries had brightly decorated tables set up in the multipurpose room featuring information, goods, and treats. As students and parents sampled ethnic delicacies, they were able to learn about their fellow students' countries of origin and connect with each other.

The club has been an integral part of community events that promote positivity and learning about Asian culture.

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The annual West Orange High School Art Show, held April 30 in the Library Media Center, displayed stunning artwork by students in grades 9-12 as well as AP art classes. Artwork included oil, watercolor, pencil, chalk, sculpture, mosaic, acrylic, clothing, furniture and more. All students can take art in any year, but students aspiring to AP Art comprise most of the third and fourth year programs. Each AP artist creates a portfolio of work that is used when applying to colleges.

WEST ORANGE, NJ – Holocaust survivor Fran Malkin visited Roosevelt Middle School on April 30 to recount her tale of death, hiding, suffering, devastation and ultimately, reconciliation to her past as she answered questions from students and showed a clip from the documentary film “No. 4 Street of Our Lady.”The Holocaust studies program at Roosevelt Middle School is part of the curriculum of Language Arts Reading teacher, Jay Wecht.

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Washington Elementary School held two back-to-back learning events: Family Literacy Night on April 23 and Math Night on April 24. The well-attended programs were possible, thanks to a grant from NJEA’s Families and Schools Together Work for Children (F.A.S.T.) and the West Orange Education Association (WOEA). The program works to encourage families to be involved in their children’s education, to enhance their academic progress and to feel welcome in public schools.

WEST ORANGE, NJ -- Science classes at Edison Middle School celebrated Earth Day on April 28, prepping their community gardens for the summer crops that will soon be planted. Each year, the students help clean out the gardens during spring and autumn. Enthusiastic students from the Roosevelt Middle School Environmental Club were also on hand to mulch, weed and clean out the areas following a chilly winter. The community garden was the brainchild of former science teacher Martha Smalley.
