WEST ORANGE, NJ – During the most recent town council meeting, members discussed Resolution 143-25, which is “The Maintenance of Various Township-Owned Parcels, Including Turf Maintenance, Litter and Debris Collection, Weed Control and Fall Leaf Collection and Disposal Re-Bid,” which was to accept a proposed agreement from of D’Onofrio & Son, Inc. West Orange had a temporary contract with D’Onofrio.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Superintendent Jason Bing reported that he met with the two middle school student councils for the first time. He wanted to meet with the high school student council, but there was a scheduling conflict. “There will be monthly meetings where we bring students to this building to discuss issues.” He also spoke of the ribbon-cutting for the high school library/media center and commons area. “We were lucky enough to have current and past board presence.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kevin Gilbert shared the results from the New Jersey School Climate Improvement (NJSCI) Survey, the Hanover Diversity Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Survey and the Upbeat Survey. He explained that Rutgers University began the NJSCI survey in the 2021-2022 school year. It was administered to SOMA middle schools and the high school.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ – Several weeks ago, Xavier Kong of Troop 106, West Orange planned, supervised and built four recycled wood fishing pole holders for the Essex County Park System. Last week, Kyle Kuzniewski, Troop 106, West Orange designed, supervised and built an Eagle Nest Platform for the Essex County Environmental Center. The Eagle Nest Platform is on Bird Lane Trail at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland.

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – SOMA Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kevin Gilbert provided the results of the “Year 4: Triple I Experience Survey – Family” during the May 29 BOE meeting. He explained that families of students who are being bused to schools that aren't the closest one to them were surveyed in January 2025 to find out what they like and don’t like about the Intentional Integration Initiative (III). The survey was sent to 1,018 families, and 268 families responded with valuable insights.
