GROVE – Authorities with the Quapaw Nation Marshal Service released a statement Feb. 5 that the discovery of human remains near Cardin on Jan. 31 resulted in the recovery of Aubrey Dameron, a Cherokee Nation citizen who went missing on March 9, 2019.
Sportsbook bills are back in state legislature

OKLAHOMA CITY – With a new session underway for the Oklahoma Legislature, there is the annual avalanche of bills through which to sift, and within it are the latest stabs at allowing the state’s Native tribes to offer sportsbook gaming. Sportsbook, or “betting on games,” has been suggested by lawmakers in previous sessions, but such measures have not come to floor votes; instead disappearing into committee or being withdrawn. Author of one new measure, Senate Bill 125, is State Sen.

TAHLEQUAH – During the regular monthly meeting of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council on Jan. 13, councilor heard reports from Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Chuck Garrett, CEO for Cherokee Nation Businesses. Hoskin began by mentioning his appointment of Daniel Mead as CN acting marshal effective Jan. 1. Mead, who has been with the CN Marshal Service for 18 years, fills the vacancy left by the retirement of Shannon Buhl, who announced his retirement Nov. 1, 2024.

TAHLEQUAH – Sally Wilson, a supervisor for Indian Child Welfare with the Cherokee Nation, can cite disagreeable examples of Cherokee or Native overrepresentation and underrepresentation in federal and state programs. She can point to overrepresentation in the foster system. “Cherokee Nation is involved in child welfare cases all over the United States,” Wilson said. “However, most of our cases are in Oklahoma where the disproportionality rates are astonishing.
Zickefoose signs to wrestle at University of Central Oklahoma

CLAREMORE – Cherokee Nation citizen Cooper Zickefoose, a senior at Claremore High School, has signed a letter of intent to join the wrestling program at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. Zickefoose won the 5A individual state title at 165 pounds with a 10-4 decision over Skylar Red Elk of Lawton MacArthur last spring. He concluded his junior season with a 38-0 record. He hopes to win a second state championship this season and eclipse 100 career victories for his CHS career.
Hoskin signs new car tag compact with state

TAHLEQUAH – Months of negotiations on a vehicle tag compact were concluded on Dec. 6 – at least from the perspective of the Cherokee Nation – when Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. signed the terms of the agreement with the state of Oklahoma during a brief ceremony inside the W.W. Keeler Complex.
Brown sisters in starting lineup for NSU

TAHLEQUAH – At Northeastern State University, the women’s basketball team has a pair of Cherokee Nation sisters in its starting lineup. On Nov. 14, true freshman Annaston Brown opened the game against Haskell Indian Nations University as the small forward in the NSU RiverHawks’ lineup along with her older sister, Aubrey Brown, who started at point guard.
CNE federal lawsuit proceeds after injunction setback in casino case

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Years of legal wrestling over the Cherokee Nation’s plans for its Legends Resort and Casino in Pope County, Arkansas, recently moved to federal court, resulting in a decision against Cherokee Nation Entertainment. CNE, holder of a gaming license deemed invalid by Arkansas voters, recently filed suit against the state of Arkansas in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
