    Ransomware gang Qilin today took credit for a cyber attack on Botetourt County Public Schools earlier this month and demanded the district pay a ransom by June 12, 2025. On May 13, 2025, superintendent Jonathan Russ sent a message to families in the Virginia school district saying that a cybersecurity incident disrupted some of the district’s IT systems. Qilin took credit for the attack on its website, saying it stole 315 GB of data from Botetourt County Public Schools.

    Union County, Pennsylvania yesterday confirmed it notified an undisclosed number of people of a March 2025 data breach that compromised Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and protected health information held by the County Children and Youth Services. A breach disclosure on the US Department of Health and Human Services website states Union County notified 501 people, but that figure is likely just a placeholder until the total number of victims is determined.

    Ransomware gang Qilin over the weekend claimed responsibility for last month’s cyber attack on the city of Abilene, Texas. The city is still investigating an April 18, 2025 cyber incident that disrupted various city department networks and payment processing, according to an alert on Abilene’s official website. Qilin says it stole 477 GB of data from the city and demanded a ransom be paid by May 27, 2025. If the city refuses to pay, Qilin threatens to make the data available for public download.

    Telecom service provider Communications Data Group yesterday confirmed it notified 42,518 people of a February 2025 data breach on behalf of telecom company Duo Broadband. The breach exposed personal data including names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers of Duo Broadband customers. CDG says it is the billing vendor for Duo Broadband.
