How do you navigate a marriage after one partner quits drinking? Photo / Getty ImagesMy husband couldn’t understand why I wanted to go sober, but it ultimately improved our relationship and my overall health. When we both ordered Old Fashioneds on our first date in 2012, I thought my husband might be the one. Dale told me that, when it came to cocktails, he had a sweet tooth, and he couldn’t resist a maraschino cherry or a tiny umbrella. I felt exactly the same way. I was smitten.

Do you have these in a 42?’ Is it my imagination or is the assistant rolling her eyes. ‘I can look in the back,’ she says, ‘But we don’t have capacity to carry every size in store. Have you tried online?’‘I was really hoping to try the boots on in the shop,’ I say. ‘To get a feel for the fit. Could you have a look?’ I’m trying to be polite. I’ve worked in retail, and I know it’s tough. The shop assistant might be near the end of a long shift, and she might have had a tough day.

Exclusive book extract from ‘Read Yourself Happy’My own love story is a literary one. My boyfriend smiles nervously and hands me a hard, rectangular package, about the size of my hand. ‘Happy Christmas!’ I gasp, theatrically. ‘It’s… a car?’ I tear at the wrapping paper – white, decorated with silver stars. Inside, there’s a very plain book. It might have been royal blue once, but the cover has faded. The binding is slightly loose and fraying. It smells soft and sweet, faintly powdery.

Five years ago, I decided to try and manage my anxiety by swapping my smartphone for a book. It was lockdown at the time, and I found that starting the day by reading instead of scrolling left me feeling calmer and happier. This didn’t necessarily come as a surprise: books have provided comfort and hope throughout my entire life, from when I was bullied growing up to the periods of loneliness and heartbreak since.
