    In 1993, twelve years into the epidemic of HIV/AIDS, New York City was the epicenter of infections per capita in the United States. More than 46,000 people had died in the city since the first case was officially reported. In Black and Latino communities, two major public health crises were colliding. The crack epidemic had already separated families and ended lives. And the HIV virus was attacking people’s immune systems.

    Earlier this year, award-winning and best-selling Cuban-American author Meg Medina was named the Library of Congress’ National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature — she is the first Latina to occupy this position in the country’s history. On the job, Meg is responsible for raising national awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it helps to promote lifelong literacy and education.

    The fusion group Yasser Tejeda & Palotré are making a name for themselves by blending Dominican roots sounds like salve, palo and sarandunga with jazz and rock. They recently released the album “Kijombo” which pays homage to these folkloric sounds. In the Dominican Republic, there is a rich and diverse array of folkloric and roots music that spreads across different parts of the country.
