I was live on MSNBC with Jonathan Capehart, and he asked me to explain why the Democratic share of the Latino vote keeps shrinking. It’s a complicated question with many complex answers to fit into a 30-second sound bite. But if you are Latino, what I said might make sense to you. Maybe you’ve heard this phrase before: Hay que mejorar la raza.

I never called myself a “Nutmegger” until quite recently. Had it not been for the pandemic, I might never have. When we first moved in, our elderly neighbor, a minister, said off-handedly to my Dominican-born husband, “I hope you’re not gonna paint your house Puerto Rican colors.” His wife then commented that she was worried about gangs coming in across the border. That was in 1994! We were taken aback, but not surprised and we moved on.
