Despite a turbulent few years for the car industry, the situation for both manufacturers and buyers is slowly returning to relative normality. Lead times on new vehicle orders are typically down to a few months (rather than over a year for some cars badly affected by pandemic related parts shortages), and restrictions on the availability of optional extras is easing.

The cost of charging an electric car at home will go up from 1 January 2024, following Ofgem’s announcement that the energy price cap will rise by 5%. The price cap, which applies to variable energy tariffs and limits the price of a single unit of energy, had gone down in October this year. However, it has now has been revised upwards for the forthcoming quarter, with rising wholesale energy costs and market instability blamed.

The new BYD Seal and Dolphin EVs, as well as the P7 from newcomer brand XPeng, have been awarded full five-star crash safety ratings in the latest batch of tests by car safety organisation Euro NCAP. Electric car buyers can expect a great deal more choice this year and next, with BYD lining up its all-new EVs for UK showrooms, hot on the heels of its Atto 3 small SUV.

The Best Buy large SUV comfortably got the nod over more ‘premium’ rivals from traditional luxury brands in our annual poll, which, this year, took in feedback on 59,921 individual cars.
