INDIANAPOLIS — Only feet away from the world-famous yard of bricks that dot the Indianapolis Motor Speedway finish line, NTT IndyCar Series star Graham Rahal sat on the pit wall, face covered in sweat, cheeks red and exhausted. TALLADEGA, Ala. — Red in the face, frustrated and teary-eyed, Jeb Burton was storming on the Talladega Superspeedway pit road on Saturday (April 26) afternoon after the NASCAR Xfinity Series event. The Virginian swore to protest the results of the finish of the day’s race, of which the winner had been decided by a photo of the leader the moment of the final caution. Upon seeing the image for the first time, Burton wasn’t convinced he wasn’t the winner.

It was precisely noon ET on Thursday, April 10, when I received the text from my Frontstretch colleague Bryan Nolen that my friend Al Pearce, a Hall-of-Fame racing journalist and fellow Army officer, had passed away. I was riding in an armored vehicle in my Army uniform on the way to qualify on the M4 rifle — an annual requirement for us reservists. Silently, I locked my phone and stared at the passing-by landscape, my fellow soldiers unaware of the news I had just received.
