    As the routine is, some pilgrims from the countryside, who trekked long journeys to celebrate the Martyrs Day on June 3 at the Catholic shrine, were stranded yesterday, with the majority claiming they used up their transport money. Several pilgrims who had booked buses to ferry them back home were seen stranded by the roadside outside the shrine, waiting impatiently for their arrival.

The celebration held every June 3, commemorates the 45 young Christian coverts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of the king of Buganda at the time.

    Every June 3, Namugongo becomes a focal point of national and international attention as pilgrims converge to celebrate Uganda Martyrs Day.  These pilgrims, many of whom trek several days from distant dioceses across Uganda and neighbouring countries, brave long distances, harsh weather, and exhaustion to pay homage to the martyrs who died in the name of their faith.
