Parliament is today expected to vote on several new taxes that were proposed by the government last month. The seven tax amendment Bills that have been under scrutiny by the parliamentary Committee on Finance, include the Income Taxes, Tax Procedures Code, the Value Added Tax, The Excise Duty, and the Hides and Skins (Export Duty. The tax amendment Bills will be presented for the second and third reading before the MPs can vote and approve them one by one as required by law.

With barely eight months left until the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2026, Members of Parliament are now legally permitted to defect and join other political parties. Article 83 of the Constitution says that an MP loses their seat if they leave the party they were elected under, unless it is within 12 months before the General Election.
