Numerous scientific disciplines face challenges regarding the robustness and replicability of reported results (Wallach et al., 2018). To counter such challenges, new strategies are emerging that aim to improve the rigour and credibility of published research. Preregistration and registered reporting are two of these strategies, with the Open Science movement strongly advocating preregistration of hypotheses and analyses to improve reproducibility and transparency (Nosek et al., 2019).

A recent publication in a national newspaper in the UK reported the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently fit and well 50-year-old female returning from holiday after complaining of chest pain as the plane began its descent to land (Raemason, 2024). The cause of death was an acute aortic dissection (AD), an infrequent yet potentially catastrophic disorder affecting the abdominal and thoracic aortic segments.

1 INTRODUCTION In opposition to any stated opinion that the death penalty and state execution are somehow humane, we demonstrate herein that the latest method, nitrogen anoxia, invoked by the state of Alabama is inherently inhumane. From a respiratory and cerebral bioenergetics approach, we show that both the methods used and their application are flawed with physiological and forensic misconceptions.

1 INTRODUCTION Cognitive decline and dementia represent a major health and social care challenge in the 21st century as a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality (Livingston et al., 2020). Current estimates indicate that over 55 million people worldwide are living with some form of dementia and this will further increase to 152 million by 2050, doubling every 5 years (Cao et al., 2020; Livingston et al., 2020; Nichols et al., 2019; Oudbier et al., 2022).

Anthropogenic climate change will be among our greatest challenges this century. At current global temperatures of 1.1°C above pre-industrial averages, 75% of hot weather extremes and 18% of heavy precipitation events are attributable to global warming (Fischer & Knutti, 2015), and 1-in-1000-year events are as much as 150 times more likely to occur (Philip et al., 2021).

Professor Niels H. Secher, one of our outstanding modern-day physiologists who has contributed significantly to the Copenhagen School of Exercise Physiology and control of cerebral blood flow, was the proud recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Danish Cardiovascular Academy. The award is given each year at the Danish Cardiovascular Academy summer meeting to a scientist who over a lifetime has inspired researchers in the cardiovascular field, extending the current body of knowledge.
