Data from the WA Department of Transport backs up the stark visual. Monochromatic cars make up 82 per cent of all cars sold last financial year, up from 60 per cent in 2000. After those dominant tones, bursts of blue represent only 8 per cent, red is at 4.8 per cent, and green 1.8 per cent.

David Braund went to his GP in April with a small pimple-like mark on his forehead and a swollen lymph node. He was quickly diagnosed with stage four metastasised malignant melanoma. The skin cancer on his head had spread to his lymph nodes and liver. He was told without treatment he likely had less than 12 months to live. But he said the tide might be turning since he and another Perth patient became the first in Australia to participate in a ground-breaking study.

The WA Salaries and Allowances Tribunal has just approved a four per cent pay rise for Western Australia's politicians, and even more generous increases for some senior public servants. Professor Margaret Seares, chair of the tribunal, told Damian Smith on ABC Radio Perth that a four per cent pay rise was consistent with increases given across the community in recent years. She also pointed out that competitive salaries were important when it came to attracting people into politics.

Cyclist Tama MacFater was doing a training ride at 7.30pm for a planned ironman competition when he unexpectedly encountered a black, mesh fence on an unlit section of the path. Unable to see the fence in time in the dark, he slammed into, and then over, the fence, suffering several broken fingers, concussion and substantial bruising. His bike was a write-off.

In Seville Grove, a suburb in Perth's south-east, a social media post asking whether it is ok to refuse to have a street tree planted by the council on the verge prompted numerous comments against the trees. "I complained immediately and told them to come remove it or I'd take it out with my car. Was removed within a week and no tree since," one commenter wrote. Others admitted unilaterally removing the trees.
