Xia discusses Sino-US trade war with Macau officials

The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Office, Xia Baolong, discussed the impact of the Sino-US trade war on Macau with the SAR's officials on Sunday. That's according to Macau's delegates to the national legislature who met him during a seminar, which was also attended by the SAR's Chief Executive, Sam Hou-fai. A delegate, Domonic Sio, quoted Xia as saying Macau should stay confident in light of the trade war.
Beijing to offer more tax refunds for foreign tourists

Mainland authorities on Sunday said they are improving tax refund policies for foreign tourists to boost inbound consumption. Among the changes, the minimum amount that can trigger a refund for a traveller at the same tax-refund shop on the same day will be lowered from 500 yuan to 200. The cash refund limit will also be doubled to 20,000 yuan. More stores in shopping areas, scenic spots, airports and hotels will also be included in the tax refund regime.
President Xi declares Harbin Asian Winter Games open

President Xi Jinping on Friday declared the Asian Winter Games officially open in Harbin, marking the second time the northeastern Chinese city has hosted the event. He was joined by First Lady Peng Liyuan, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, at the extravaganza in Heilongjiang province. The crowd at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre cheered loudly as Team Hong Kong, China were among 34 competing countries and regions introduced.

Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xuyin said on Monday that the nation will keep building transport networks with Belt and Road countries, while continuing its internal reform of logistics and transport to lower costs. He made the comment while giving a speech at the Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference in Hong Kong. The official said international supply chains are under duress amid global uncertainties, in part arising from geopolitics and trade protectionism.
Shanghai tech firms gear up for HK market

Two Shanghai-based firms that are taking part in a national expo said they plan on expanding their reach into Hong Kong. TMiRob Technology and Faraconix are among the firms that have signed cooperation agreements at the China International Import Expo. TMiRob produces AI-powered robots that can be sent into isolation wards to conduct simple medical procedures, such as checking the temperature and radiation levels of cancer patients.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan says it's extraordinary that Hong Kong scientists are joining the country's latest Antarctica exploration, with icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2 setting sail along with a third ship on Friday. The mission to the South Pole is China's 41st and will last for more than half a year. Speaking at a ceremony marking the ships' journey, Chan said Hongkongers' participation in the mission marks an important milestone.

Former Macau top judge Sam Hou-fai on Sunday won the SAR's Chief Executive election, receiving all but six votes from a 400-strong election committee. Electoral authorities said there were four blank ballots cast, with no invalid votes. Two members were absent. Sam, 62, is from Zhongshan in Guangdong, making him the first Macau leader born in mainland China. He graduated from Peking University's law school and moved to Macau in 1986.

Beijing officials responsible for Macau affairs on Sunday offered their congratulations to the SAR's former top judge, Sam Hou-fai, on winning the Chief Executive race. Sam took 394 out of 400 votes from the Election Committee, with four blank votes and two members absent. The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office said the result indicates that the Macau society widely recognises Sam's character, vision, ability and style.

The sole candidate in Macau's chief executive race, Sam Hou-fai, made the first community visit of his campaign on Wednesday. Sam met grassroots residents of Iao Hon, a densely populated area in the northern part of the SAR that is undergoing redevelopment. Former Macau top judge Sam Hou-fai on Tuesday submitted his nominations to run for chief executive, becoming the sole candidate for the post. Sam put forward 383 nominations from the 400-strong election committee. Committee members can only nominate one person, so 10 other hopefuls have been stripped of the chance of getting the minimum 66 nominations required to enter the election. "So many election committee members support me, up until now, I am very satisfied.
