President Xi Jinping on Friday declared the Asian Winter Games officially open in Harbin, marking the second time the northeastern Chinese city has hosted the event. He was joined by First Lady Peng Liyuan, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, at the extravaganza in Heilongjiang province. The crowd at the Harbin International Conference, Exhibition and Sports Centre cheered loudly as Team Hong Kong, China were among 34 competing countries and regions introduced.

Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xuyin said on Monday that the nation will keep building transport networks with Belt and Road countries, while continuing its internal reform of logistics and transport to lower costs. He made the comment while giving a speech at the Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference in Hong Kong. The official said international supply chains are under duress amid global uncertainties, in part arising from geopolitics and trade protectionism.

Two Shanghai-based firms that are taking part in a national expo said they plan on expanding their reach into Hong Kong. TMiRob Technology and Faraconix are among the firms that have signed cooperation agreements at the China International Import Expo. TMiRob produces AI-powered robots that can be sent into isolation wards to conduct simple medical procedures, such as checking the temperature and radiation levels of cancer patients.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan says it's extraordinary that Hong Kong scientists are joining the country's latest Antarctica exploration, with icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2 setting sail along with a third ship on Friday. The mission to the South Pole is China's 41st and will last for more than half a year. Speaking at a ceremony marking the ships' journey, Chan said Hongkongers' participation in the mission marks an important milestone.

Former Macau top judge Sam Hou-fai on Sunday won the SAR's Chief Executive election, receiving all but six votes from a 400-strong election committee. Electoral authorities said there were four blank ballots cast, with no invalid votes. Two members were absent. Sam, 62, is from Zhongshan in Guangdong, making him the first Macau leader born in mainland China. He graduated from Peking University's law school and moved to Macau in 1986.
