Typhoon Ampil is set to brush past eastern Japan on Friday as a “very strong” storm — on par with a Category 2 hurricane — threatening to bring damaging winds and torrential rain to a wide area. On Friday morning, Ampil had prompted storm and heavy rain warnings across the Kanto region as its outer bands moved over land.

Tropical Storm Maria is forecast to make landfall in the Tohoku region on Monday morning, crossing over to the Sea of Japan while bringing heavy rains and strong winds. Rated by the Meteorological Agency as a strong tropical storm — one level below a typhoon — Maria is expected to maintain its strength as it crosses over the region. The agency urged residents to be on alert for landslides, rising and overflowing rivers and flooding in low-lying areas, especially in the Tohoku region.

Indonesia's Ruang volcano saw a massive eruption on Wednesday night, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to probe whether a tsunami had been generated. A tsunami can be generated by pressure waves from large-scale eruptions. The JMA said that if a tsunami had been generated, it could reach Okinawa as early as 11 p.m. The agency said it could not offer an estimate of the potential height of a tsunami, adding that it would give updates based on data from ocean observation stations.

More than a week has passed since a massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake turned New Year's Day into disaster in Ishikawa Prefecture, where at least 202 have died and about 100 remain missing. Over the three-day weekend, a team from The Japan Times reported from the hard-hit Noto Peninsula — including the city of Wajima, where buildings were flattened and a major fire destroyed the central morning market. In Wajima and beyond, homes were toppled, family members were taken and livelihoods were erased.
