By Laura Revell, Dan Smale and Richard McKenzie* of At this time of year, as the sun rises over Antarctica, a "hole" opens up in Earth's ozone layer. The ozone layer is a vital planetary boundary that protects all life on Earth from the sun's damaging ultraviolet radiation. But as our research shows, a series of unusual events in recent years caused ozone holes that lasted longer.

1 INTRODUCTION Anthropogenic climate change is driving reconfigurations of entire ecosystems, as species shift their distributions to track favourable thermal environments (Lenoir et al., 2020). This pattern is particularly strong for marine ectotherms, which generally occupy most of their thermal niche so that their distributions are strongly constrained by temperature (Sunday et al., 2012).

AbstractSeagrasses are marine flowering plants that form extensive meadows from the inter-tidal zone up to ~50 m depth. As biological and ecological Essential Biodiversity Variables, seagrass cover and composition provide a wide range of ecosystem services. Inter-tidal seagrass meadows provide services to many ecosystems, so monitoring their occurrence, extent, condition and diversity can be used to indicate the biodiversity and health of local ecosystems.
