1 INTRODUCTION Anthropogenic climate change is driving reconfigurations of entire ecosystems, as species shift their distributions to track favourable thermal environments (Lenoir et al., 2020). This pattern is particularly strong for marine ectotherms, which generally occupy most of their thermal niche so that their distributions are strongly constrained by temperature (Sunday et al., 2012).

Salmon are very much a cold-water fish, so they can get quite stressed when swimming up increasingly warm rivers to spawn. A new study shows that by installing "cooling stations" in those rivers, we could help the threatened fish make the trip.
