A slow-moving storm system has been crawling up the East Coast this week, drenching the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic with several inches of rainfall. Cloud cover will return to Connecticut as the storm inches closer, but dry air at the surface will essentially repel the rainfall for most of the day on Tuesday. Despite the cloud cover, temperatures will stay warm in the 70s with a fairly light breeze at 5 to 15 mph.

After days of drenching rain, Connecticut will be showered with sunshine on Monday as temperatures return to the 70s. Wind gusts could reach 25 mph at times, but there won't be too much else to complain about with a sunny and warm day across the state. Tuesday will likely be the warmest day of the week as temperatures rise to near 80 degrees. High pressure has parked itself overhead and is contributing to this fair weather, but will be pushed eastward by an incoming front by the middle of the week.

Bright sunshine will lead to a nice day to honor our moms across Connecticut on Sunday. Temperatures will remain a few degrees below normal but will stay on the comfortable side in the mid to upper 60s for much of the state. Keep in mind, the UV Index rises quickly this time of year, even though temperatures are sometimes slow to catch up. The sun angle during mid-May is as strong as it is in July, making sunblock a necessity for those heading outdoors.

Friday's rain will linger into Saturday morning as a slow-moving storm system continues to give the Northeast a flood threat. The last two weeks have brought more than five inches of rainfall, leading to swollen streams and rivers across the state.

Connecticut has seen its fair share of major flood events, from the historic floods of 1955 to more recent events like the August 2024 flash flood emergency in Fairfield and New Haven counties. During periods of rainfall, various flood alerts are often issued by the National Weather Service, but there can often be confusion from the public as to the meaning of each type of alert.
