Saturday Night Fever hit the silver screen in 1977 and epitomised the culture of the time. Disco music, flared trousers and pure escapism. Saturdays remain the most popular night for going out, although it has very much moved on from the days of John Travolta and bell-bottoms. But the pleasure-seeking lifestyle has remained and spawned a collection of what might be referred to as the “Saturday night conditions”. Let’s start with “fever”.

Locked-in syndrome is a rare phenomenon which makes conscious people almost entirely unable to move and communicate. It is estimated there are fewer than 1,000 existing cases in the US, and between 50 and 300 in the UK. In some instances, locked-in syndrome paralyses all muscles. In others, some muscles escape paralysis and can act as a means of communication.

It’s become a custom at our office Christmas party to do a team quiz, followed by a jolly round of The Twelve Days of Christmas. It typically ends in chaos. As a practising GP, I think it’s perhaps worthwhile doing a run down of the clinical hazards of the season instead.

British TV presenter Davina McCall has undergone neurosurgery to remove a colloid cyst – a type of benign brain tumour. McCall was diagnosed with the tumour by chance. In an Instagram video posted in November 2024, she explained:A few months ago, I did a menopause talk for a company and they offered me a health scan in return, which I thought I was going to ace. But it turned out I had a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst, which is very rare – three in a million.

Saat menjadi mahasiswa kedokteran, kuku merupakan salah satu pelajaran mata kuliah anatomi yang sangat sulit saya ikuti. Saya akan merasa mual ketika melihat pemandangan cedera kuku yang menyakitkan. Trauma tersebut mungkin berasal dari pengalaman saya ketika melihat seseorang dengan kasar melepas plester dari jempol kakinya yang terluka. Namun, seluruh kukunya justru ikut terangkat. Aduh! Syukurlah saya sudah pulih dari trauma tersebut.
