Lifeline Animal Project, which operates shelters in Fulton and DeKalb counties, said more than 60 large dogs housed and the old Fulton County shelter are in need of emergency placement ahead of the heavy rains expected from Hurricane Helene. The old shelter, at 860 Marietta Blvd., was built in the 1970s and has a history of flooding during large storms, Lifeline officials said in a news release.

Fulton County commissioners are back to Square One in the debate over whether to build a $1.7 billion new facility or renovate the existing jail. The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating conditions inside the jail, which has been plagued by inmate deaths, violence and problems with health care. Meanwhile, a new coalition is suggesting renovation, and reducing the inmate population with fewer arrests and quicker release of eligible inmates.
