    Police in Fairfield are crediting automated license plate reader technology for helping to track down a stolen vehicle and arrest its suspected thief. Shortly before noon on Sunday, officers responded to a Flock Safety camera system activation in the area of Allan Witt Park about a vehicle that was reported stolen. Police found the vehicle on Diamond Court occupied by a 46-year-old suspect, who was taken into custody and booked into jail on suspicion of the auto theft.

    Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit trains will begin taking passengers to and from a new station in Windsor starting Saturday, the first of three stations that will extend the SMART service into northern Sonoma County. The new station near the Windsor Town Green downtown park will be followed in the coming years by new stations in Healdsburg and then Cloverdale. The SMART system previously has had its northernmost station near Charles M.

    Air quality officials have issued the first Spare the Air alert of the year for ozone in the Bay Area for Friday, when triple-digit inland temperatures are expected to combine with motor vehicle exhaust to create high levels of the harmful pollutant. The Bay Area Air District issued the alert because air quality is forecast to be unhealthy in the region due to ozone, also known as smog.

    A woman whose mutilated remains were found in a San Jose field more than 40 years ago has been identified by genealogical testing as a 54-year-old grandmother with possible Oakland ties, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday. Vivian Moss was identified as the woman whose dismembered torso was found on July 11, 1981, with two religious pendants nearby in an empty field where a Berryessa Transit Center parking structure is now located, prosecutors said.

    The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is hosting two fireworks buyback events next month to encourage people to turn in illegal fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. The buybacks will take place on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northern Branch Courthouse at 1050 Mission Road in South San Francisco and on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new Sheriff’s Office substation at 690 Broadway in Redwood City.
