Since she entered the building at Manitou Springs High School as a wide-eyed freshman two years ago, she could help but stare at one number on the wall of the school’s gymThat number was 119 feet, 10 inches. It signified the school record in the discus and was set by Whitney Frase in 2009. Wall wanted to beat that number.

The time is done for being defensive. That’s the approach that the Montrose wrestling team has tried to grasp. Coach Neil Samples saw that mentality take hold for the first time at the Gunnison Cowboy Invite. Although missing a few wrestlers due to illness, this was the most complete the Red Hawks roster has been all season. They scored 128.5 points to finish eighth, but the big takeaway was that the wrestlers weren’t taking a defensive approach into the matches. They went on offense.

A little weekend getaway for the Montrose girls basketball team played crucial dividends in the Southwestern League opener. Returning from the winter break can always have its challenges for the winter sports teams. For the Montrose girls basketball squad, it was important to get back on the court and shake off that potential rust before getting settled into league play starting next week. The Red Hawks did just that as they rolled to a 52-15 win over Basalt on Tuesday.

Montrose boys basketball coach Ryan Voehringer watched as Basalt threw some defensive sets at his Red Hawks that they hadn’t seen too much of this season. And he didn’t like what he was seeing. Not because it wasn’t on the up-and-up, but because it turned out to be a good way to try and limit what Montrose could do from a scoring standpoint.
