It wasn’t so much that my friend, a Brit who has lived in Los Angeles for many years, said the word “taco” differently than I do. The confounding thing was that it was difficult for him to hear the difference, and that when he could distinguish it, he insisted that his way was more correct, closer to the way a Spanish speaker would say it.

Meta’s equivalent to Craigslist and eBay is a vital resource for home goods and design finds—if you’re willing to sift through the trash to find treasure. A couple of years ago, when I was shopping for a new couch, I spent an hour or so a day, every day, for weeks, until I found the right one, on Facebook Marketplace. It took another week or two to pester the seller enough to actually meet me, and then a day to figure out the logistics of moving a couch when you drive a Fiat.

My valiant efforts to save my veggies from the inquisitive paws of some friendly critters was a flop—so the garden is now their buffet. Before I moved to Los Angeles,I lived in New York, where I was an enthusiastic gardener, which meant that I had tomatoes and herbs and peppers in containers on my fourth floor outdoor space that my landlord advertised as a "balcony" but which was actually a fire escape in which the ladder had been removed, making escape impossible.
