Paul McCartney has written dozens of classic songs, but none makes me smile more than “Let It Be.” The song is especially meaningful on Mother’s Day. This three-word piece of maternal advice is part catharsis, part inspiration, and a balm when things are going wrong. “Let It Be” is the title track from the Beatles 12th and final studio album. Many believe the song is an allusion to the Virgin Mary.

And, not coincidentally, they’re re-releasing — on World Press Freedom Day — one of their hits, to help journalists. Trust me — there are not many songs, much less hits, that check all those boxes.

We’ve made it to the first of May, or May Day, as it’s called. But in the White House, mayday might be a better descriptor. That’s the international distress signal for assistance required. Michael Waltz made it 100 days as Trump’s national security adviser. Then suddenly he was gone. Ish. Waltz, who infamously added the editor of The Atlantic to an unsecured Signal group chat of Trump officials discussing a military strike, was removed by Trump.
