Kayleigh Heckel invited to USA Basketball U19 trials

FIBA Kayleigh Heckel will depart UConn’s summer workouts early to participate in USA Basketball’s U19 National Team trials in Colorado Springs, the team announced on Thursday. Beginning on June 18, she’ll compete for a spot on the 12-player roster ahead of the FIBA U19 World Cup in Czechia. Heckel previously represented the US at the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup. She won gold and earned a spot on the all-tournament second team after averaging 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

On Monday, the State of Connecticut announced the Holyoke, Massachusetts-based company purchased the naming rights to the venue, which had been known as the XL Center since 2007. CT Insider reported the deal is worth $20 million over 10 years.

Ian Bethune/The UConn Blog Qadence Samuels has a new home. After transferring from UConn in April, the Forestville, Maryland native signed with the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday. She’ll have two years of eligibility left. “[Transferring] was a good move for her because she loves to play,” Geno Auriemma said of Samuels after UConn’s championship parade.

The women’s side will open the new campaign at home on Sunday, Aug. 17 against Stony Brook while the men’s squad will take the field for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 21 at Syracuse. There’s just one home double-header on the slate: Saturday, Oct. 18. The women will take on Villanova at 1 p.m. ET while the men will face St. John’s later in the day, though the time has not been announced.

The Huskies will play six games at Pratt & Whitney Stadium, all of which are afternoon games. The season begins on Saturday, Aug. 30 with an in-state matchup against CCSU, set for 2 p.m. ET on UConn+. As the lone FCS opponent, it’s the only contest that won’t be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

It’s the program’s first standalone world championship since 1933 and first major tournament crown since the 1996 World Cup. Both the US and Switzerland failed to score through 60 minutes of regulation in the final, sending the game to sudden-death overtime.
