Ian Bethune/The UConn Blog UConn men’s and women’s basketball will take part in an exhibition double-header against Boston College at Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday, Oct. 13. It’ll be hosted by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, which announced the event on Wednesday. Tip times and broadcast information will be released at a later date. This will be the first unofficial game for Geno Auriemma’s squad since winning its 12th national championship last season.

Both the US and Switzerland failed to score through 60 minutes of regulation in the final, sending the game to sudden-death overtime.

The Huskies joined Southeastern Louisiana, Troy and Virginia among the first four out. Creighton, the Big East Tournament champion, earned the league’s automatic bid and is the 3-seed in the Fayetteville Regional. Xavier missed the field as well, making the Big East a one-bid conference.

Jim Penders’ team would have needed to win two games against the Bluejays to claim a tournament crown. The Huskies left the bases loaded three times across the afternoon and stranded 12 runners overall. They worked six walks and were hit by two pitches, but had just seven hits, three of which were by Caleb Shpur.

Jim Penders’ team earned an important bubble win as it jockeys for NCAA Tournament position, including with the Musketeers. Eleven Huskies came to the plate in the frame, scoring six runs to turn a 4-0 advantage into a much larger 10-0 lead.

Ian Bethune/The UConn Blog UConn baseball moved on in the Big East Tournament on Thursday, breaking out the bats in a big way to avoid elimination with an 13- win over St. John’s. All nine starters had at least one hit, with 15 in all. Aidan Dougherty was 4-for-5 with three RBI, with two knocks each for Bryan Padilla, Rob Rispoli and Beau Root. Ryan Daniels and Tyler Minick also added a home run each.

Ian Bethune/The UConn Blog UConn baseball led 6-0 after two innings and 8-6 going into the ninth, but with Xavier down to its final out, it tied up the game and had another two-out rally in the 10th to send the Huskies to the losers’ bracket by an 11-8 final score. Jake Lambdin led off the frame with a double and Connor Misch, who had three hits, broke the 8-8 tie with a two-out single. Clay Burdette then drilled a homer to put his team up three.

On Tuesday, the Huskies landed USC transfer guard Kayleigh Heckel to fill the 15th and final available scholarship on the roster. This is the second straight year that UConn has dipped into the backcourt to shore up its ball-handling depth. After bringing in Kaitlyn Chen from Princeton last offseason, the Huskies reeled in the Port Chester, New York native. She’ll be a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.
