California’s much-maligned High-Speed Rail project was hit with a dose of reality on Wednesday. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy released a compliance review of the project on Wednesday, finding that it has no viable path forward to completion. The backstory: California voters approved High-Speed rail in 2008 for a projected total cost of $33 billion to connect San Francisco to Los Angeles by 2020.

Discussion from the calls last week to keep a transgender athlete from competing against girls in the CIF Track and Field State Championships in Clovis spilled over to the Clovis City Council on Monday. Clovis City Councilmember Lynne Ashbeck took issue during the council meeting with how fellow Councilmember Diane Pearce opposed biological male AB Hernandez from competing against girls over the weekend, leading Ashbeck to leave the dais, saying she was disrespected by Pearce.

A former Clovis accountant is heading to prison for stealing over $800,000 from a bank. The big picture: Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith announced that Kenneth Gould, 69, was sentenced to one year in prison for the theft. Driving the news: Gould was a CPA and operated a payroll services company in Clovis. From October 2017 through March 2018, Gould initiated several fraudulent electronic payments from one of his clients’ accounts to his payroll company’s account at the bank.

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge is working to help children across the country enhance their reading skills. Judge’s ALL RISE Foundation announced this week that it will hold its ALL RISE 2025 Summer Book Club from June 3 to Sep. 3. The big picture: The book club challenges readers to choose a grade-level book from its list. It was launched in the summer of 2023 with around 150 readers and had around 350 members from 170 communities last year.
