CNH pauses equipment shipments

CNH recently began a temporary pause on shipments of farm equipment from North American and European factories to assess the global tariff situation. The move will not affect production or parts shipments. CNH is the parent company to Case IH, New Holland and other brands. "This is a temporary move until we assess the full impact of planned tariffs on pricing," CNH Industrial noted in a statement. "There are no impacts to production, and parts shipments continue as planned.

USDA recently unveiled a new strategy to slow the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), ease the rising cost of eggs and protect the U.S. poultry industry. Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins detailed a new five-pronged strategy to combat HPAI in which USDA plans to invest up to $1 billion as part of the comprehensive effort. This is in addition to funding already being provided to indemnify growers for depopulated poultry flocks.

With days growing longer and the official start of spring about a month away March 20, it will soon be one of my favorite times of the year. It may not feel like it after recent rounds of winter weather, but farmers will head to the field fairly soon as they begin preparations to plant the 2025 crops. USDA estimates show no signs of cattle herd expansion

It appears beef prices will remain under pressure for the foreseeable future as the U.S. cattle herd continues to contract. USDA’s cattle inventory report released Jan. 31 pegged the total herd nationwide at 86.7 million head. Of that total, the number of beef cows slipped to 27.9 million head as of Jan. 1, down 1% from last year, and the inventory of milk cows increased slightly to 9.35 million head.
Winter wheat planting off to good start in Illinois

A fast pace for corn and soybean harvest so far this fall provided a good start to wheat planting for a number of growers in southern Illinois. Statewide, farmers planted one-third of the winter wheat crop as of Oct. 14, which was slightly behind the average pace of 39%, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

A cold front could technically bring an end to the growing season in parts of northern Illinois this week, but it's not expected to slow harvest much. Farmers harvested 62% of soybeans and 49% of corn as of Oct. 14 statewide, which was 15 and 5 points ahead of the average pace, respectively. No measurable rainfall in most areas and a statewide average temperature of 61.2 degrees (5.5 degrees above normal) provided an average of 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork Oct.

The latest crop budget estimates released by the University of Illinois farmdoc team suggest farmers could be looking at another down year in 2025 despite the possibility of lower production costs. The farmdoc team projects breakeven prices to cover all costs for 2025 in Illinois range from $4.60 to $4.66 per bushels for corn and $11.01 to $11.56 per bushel for soybeans.
Hurricane Milton disrupts phosphate industry at 'critical time'

The widespread impact of Hurricane Milton across Florida will reverberate throughout the Corn Belt this fall. Phosphate mines and other associated infrastructure in the path of the storm were shut down prior to the storm’s arrival. And, it’s unclear when operations will resume. “Whenever we see a big weather event like this, the first priority is making sure people are safe,” Kreg Ruhl, vice president of crop nutrients at GROWMARK, told the RFD Radio Network.
