A Newcastle man has shared the touching story of how he celebrated his engagement at a Newcastle cancer centre. Raz Handa was set to move to Carlisle last summer, where his partner Kathryn lived. 31-year-old Raz was about to start a new job and the couple were looking forward to spending time fell-walking in the Lake District in their time off together. However, during the England vs Spain Euro 2024 final last July, Raz started to notice something wasn't right.

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash on the A1 in Gateshead. Emergency services were called to the A1 northbound between junction 69 for Gateshead and junction 70 for Whickham shortly after 11am on Sunday. At one point, two lanes were closed and there was a 40-minute delay and three miles of congestion, according to National Highways North East. All lanes reopened shortly after 1pm when vehicles had been recovered from the scene.

Hundreds of people attended a peaceful protest against the recent Supreme Court gender ruling in Newcastle city centre on Sunday. The Supreme Court ruled last Wednesday that the terms woman and sex in the 2010 Equality Act "refer to a biological woman and biological sex". However, there are fears that the ruling will have a huge impact on transgender people, particularly trans women.

Northumberland National Park is home to some of the oldest artwork in the country. While the nearby market town of Rothbury has the Coquetdale Art Gallery, the hills above it are home to something far more primitive. Dating back somewhere between 3,500 and 6,000 years, a series of marks were etched into boulders in Iron Age times, and can still be seen today.

A 13-year-old Sunderland girl who has been reported missing "may have travelled to Newcastle on public transport", police believe. Emily Rhodes, 13, was reported missing from the Ashbrooke area today at around 3pm. Northumbria Police officers and Emily's family are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare - as enquiries to locate her continue.
