    Ironically, the artist who best captured the subtle and ephemeral beauty of the West of Ireland was an outsider. Belfast-born Paul Henry painted canvases that are regarded as the best canvases ever painted of the region. No artist influenced Irish and international perceptions of rural traditional life and the landscape more than he did. Earlier artists had painted Irish landscapes, but these scenes looked like paintings in England or France.

    Cliona Ward, an Irish woman who has been legally resident in the U.S. for 30 years but who was recently detained by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, has been released. The release followed a May 7 hearing in Tacoma, Washington where Ward, 54, was being held. Last month she was detained by federal authorities at San Francisco International Airport after returning from Ireland where she had visited her father, who is in ill health.

    The Irish Network USA 2025 Conference took place in New Jersey from Friday through Sunday, with plenary sessions on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford. Edel Howlin, of Untapped Communications,  moderator of a panel discussion on media, is pictured left, with Kerry O’Shea, U.S. editor of IrishCentral.com, center, and host of the “Politics, Pubs, Parades & the Parish” podcast Stacy McCormack.     “Queen Bee” is a live installation, or series of happenings*, inspired by a story as told to New York-based artist Rodney Dickson. “Papillon, Saigon 2025” commemorates the 50th anniversary of the war in Vietnam ending, 20 years after “Queen Bee” debuted in Roger Smith Hotel, New York. “Papillon, Saigon 2025,” its most recent version, is currently appearing at Minh Tam Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City.

    A couple things in the media yoke this week. First of is the eponymous debut album from the band Tempest.  “Tempest” is a four piece from the north of Ireland that consists of Brendan Mulholland (flute), Bláithín Mhic Cana (vocals), Aaron O’Hagan (uilleann pipes) and Luke Ward (bouzouki and vocals) and has put together a lovely, dynamic bit of music for trad fans to enjoy.
