The State of Mississippi is seeking to follow a 2016 law that created a regional board to oversee the airport while the City of Jackson alleges the takeover has racist motivations. A U.S. District Court has denied a motion to dismiss filed by the State of Mississippi in a lawsuit challenging its efforts to gain control of the Jackson airport. The state has sought control of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport since 2016.

Mayor Lumumba will leave office later this month, making way for newly elected Mayor, State Senator John Horhn to take the reins at City Hall. The Jackson City Council has revised an ordinance allowing some hiring as the current term winds down. During its Tuesday meeting, the council reversed an action taken last month that froze hiring until June 30 on all vacant positions after the outgoing mayor announced two hires in key positions following his primary election loss.

Education, PERS and streamlining state government top the priority list for the legislative leaders. Next year’s legislative session could see several bills aimed at continuing the “Mississippi Miracle” in public education as well as streamlining state government, House and Senate leaders said late last week. Speaker Jason White (R) said during a press conference Friday that the House will create a study committee to explore school choice legislation.

Lt. Gov. Delbert Hoseman said he plans to reread former U.S. Senator Trent Lott’s book Herding Cats now that their legislative work is done. “Perhaps the Speaker should read it, too,” he said. At the end of regular legislative session in April, Governor Tate Reeves (R) said lawmakers needed “to go to their corners, get some water and towel off” before he called a special session to finish the state budget, a nod to the tension between the two chambers.
