As an elite surfer, she was used to pushing through pain and forcing her body to perform. Last week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the creation of a monetary fund and taskforce to support the displaced Afghan women's cricket team. The pledge was both long awaited and somewhat out of the blue. Since the Taliban's takeover of the country in 2021, the team has lived in exile, mostly in Canberra and Melbourne, and up until last week's announcement, the ICC had been conspicuously silent on the issue.

Sam Short was one of world swimming's breakout stars of 2023. The Australian middle and long-distance swimmer won gold in the men's 400m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, with the fourth-fastest time in history. He backed that up with silver in the 800m and bronze in the 1,500m to become the first Australian since Grant Hackett in 2005 to win medals in 400, 800 and 1,500 metres freestyle at a world championship. "I was 19 and I swam the house down," Short said.
