The ABC is a key player in promoting journalistic freedom and has significantly shaped the broadcasting landscape in Australia. Inspired by the BBC in the UK, which is government-owned, the ABC initially relied on fees collected from users of broadcast equipment. However, these licence fees were phased out in 1973 and were largely replaced by government grants, along with income generated from its commercial ventures tied to its broadcasting activities. Today, the ABC offers a range of services including radio, television, and online content, catering to audiences in both urban and rural parts of Australia, as well as internationally through ABC Australia and Radio Australia. Its main office is located in Ultimo, a central suburb of Sydney, New South Wales.
