A retired Internal Revenue Service agent is accused of stealing her friend’s life savings in a scheme, California prosecutors said. Elana Cohen-Roth, 81, of Marina Del Rey was sentenced to 12 years in state prison in relation to a yearslong scheme, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said in a May 9 news release. “The victim’s years of hard work and lifetime savings are gone due to Ms. Cohen-Roth’s greed,” District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in the release.

More than four decades ago, 15-year-old Karen Stitt said good night to her teenage boyfriend and walked toward a California bus stop. It was the last time she was seen alive, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a Feb. 24 news release. Stitt’s body was found the next day, 100 yards away from the bus stop, prosecutors said. For decades, her slaying was a mystery.

When a New Jersey man made a quick stop at a store to buy lottery tickets, he said he unexpectedly faced “a test from God.”The man was at a Phillipsburg convenience store on April 30 when he “spotted a $100 bill on the store’s counter,” New Jersey Lottery officials said in a May 12 news release. “I see it, and I turn around,” he said in the release. He noticed a customer at an ATM and two more in line, the man told lottery officials.

A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend after she rejected his romantic advances has been convicted, California prosecutors say. Martin Williams, 76, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Latashanay Jones, the Kern County District Attorney’s Office said in a May 9 news release. Williams pleaded not guilty in the 29-year-old’s death at his arraignment in October 2023, KGET reported.
