In a world that’s becoming increasingly digital, reimagining how we build community has been pertinent. The virtual sphere is an incredibly powerful outlet for marginalized folks, whether we’re screaming “Black Lives Matter!” or “Free Congo!”, we have been able to connect all over the world and recognize the interconnected struggle of the global majority. Over at Raising Mothers, Sherisa de Groot is doing something similar with an intentional focus on mothers and the act of mothering.

The holidays of today are not the same ones I grew up on. It was a time of year that I often looked forward to. There was something so special about being around family, laughing and telling stories, bickering about nothing, and of course, eating good. But change is inevitable. For my family, I mostly credit the pandemic and the earthly transition of most of the elder matriarchs as to why our family gatherings have dwindled.

Once upon a time in history, reading was among the most dangerous, but most powerful skills Black people could have. And based on all the book banning and legislation attempting to eliminate Black history, maybe it still is. Black August is a commemoration of Black political prisons and the Black freedom struggle in the United States. Many of our most celebrated freedom fighters deeply valued education, particularly beyond the Western lens.
