When my mother battled breast cancer almost 10 years ago, she was told that it was a cancer more common in women of Jewish descent. After a little genetic digging, our family learned that my mother did indeed possess some Jewish ancestry. She came through her trial remarkably free of cancer and with an additional curiosity about her heritage. We began researching and learning more about Jewish traditions — Hanukkah in particular.

Last year at this time, my husband and I released another cookbook. “Butter, Flour, Sugar, Joy” breaks some old-school baking “rules” and makes baking fun with the most important ingredient when you are in the kitchen — joy. During the pandemic, I set out to write a baking book for people who don’t generally bake — people like me. I created this sweet book with simplicity in mind, and in the process, I became a bona fide baker.

Fall for me is the beginning of a celebratory resting time. All the gardening work, along with the perpetual busy-ness and hubbub of spring and summer outdoor activities, flows into the harvest time of fall, a time for preparing to hunker down for the cold months ahead. October is all about the pumpkin. The apple-cider-and-cider-donut-pumpkin-patch tradition is strong here in the PNW, with Washington standing as one of the nation’s prominent pumpkin growers.

When you have a person in your life who you know likes to cook, or likes to eat, then you also know that one of the best gifts you can get for them aside from an all-paid dinner at Nobu is a cookbook. Cookbooks make great gifts because they offer a lasting source of inspiration, allowing recipients to explore new flavors and cooking techniques. They also provide a personal touch, connecting the gift-giver to the recipient through shared culinary experiences.

It’s 1995, and you’re in the sixth grade. You’ve just arrived home from the bus stop Friday after school. You remove your Walkman and bedazzled denim jean jacket. From the kitchen, your mom calls out, “Hamburger Helper and TGIF on TV!”I’m a millennial, so all the late ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s stuff really brings me nostalgic comfort. I am not a food snob, and if you’ve got to pick up a box or two of Rice-a-Roni or Hamburger Helper, I say go for it.

Let’s be honest: Lobster often carries a big price tag. Grabbing a delicious roll stuffed with cold water Maine lobster and all the trimmings costs about $45 at my favorite spot in Edmonds. But what if you could serve four people stuffed lobster rolls with crunchy kettle-style potato chips and cold beers for about $40 — total? I have a fun and delicious secret. Your local grocery store probably stocks small lobster tails that won’t break the bank.

Sautéed rice noodles are doused in super spicy homemade peanut sauce, then topped with fresh edamame soybeans, crispy and creamy tofu, shredded carrots, minced pork, fresh herbs, and chopped roasted peanuts. I love steamed soybeans in the pod along with crispy tofu. This dish is too good to just exist on these pages — you must give this recipe a try. Something that struck we while creating this recipe is how easy it is to forget that some of the food we love is thanks to a hardworking farmer.
