Construction began 100 years ago on the horse barn at the Horse Unit in 1925. The building was completed between January and March of 1926. The Equine Teaching Faculty Manager, Jennifer Forney-Eide, recorded many historical elements about the horse barn on The Animal Science Equine page on SDSU’s website. Eide says that the barn was built to house draft horses that were needed to do farm work on the college’s first experiment station.

South Dakota State University has almost finished creating their master plan for the future of SDSU’s campus. SDSU’s website for the comprehensive master plan says that the goal is to make a realistic and feasible plan for the University using advanced planning.

The General Activity Fee (GAF) plan was passed at the University level last spring. It was approved by students this semester and will now travel to the Board of Regents for approval in December. All students pay the general activity fee, which is $50.85 per credit hour, as part of their tuition every semester. The fee generates about $12 million a year, and $72 million over six years. Every five years, a plan is created to decide how that $72 million should be spent over the next six years.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Horse Club at SDSU put on their annual petting zoo for elementary school students and their families from Brookings, Elkton, Volga and Arlington, S.D.Dr. Carmen Paulson of the SDSU horse unit said that 290 kids attended. Those who attended were also encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate. Horse club president, Alyssa Launsbach, said that, “All of the food is going to the Brookings County food pantry.

No AdviserThe Hobo Day Committee is currently planning their biggest event of the year without an adviser. According to Grand Pooba Victoria Hansen, the old adviser, Matilyn Kerr, left in November of 2023. This was a few weeks after Hansen was appointed as Grand Pooba. Kerr was previously the Hobo Day and State-a-Thon Adviser, but she now works for Brookings Economic Development Corporation. Another adviser is now needed to help oversee both of those organizations.
